Is Jamaica open after Hurricane Melissa?

Last updated

The honest short answer: it depends where, and it changes week to week. Jamaica is a large island, and after any major storm, conditions differ a lot between regions and improve steadily as recovery continues. So we are not going to give you a blanket “yes, everything’s fine” — that is exactly the kind of claim this page exists to avoid. Instead, here is how to read the real, current situation yourself, plus a plain account of what we have and have not verified about our own stretch of coast.

Check these first — authoritative and current

The truest signals come from official channels and from whether travel is actually operating, not from a rental site. Before you rely on anything here, check:

  • Your airline. Whether flights are selling and departing on your dates is the single most reliable indicator that travel to a given airport is operating normally.
  • The Jamaica Tourist Board visitor updates (visitjamaica.com) — the official line on what is open for visitors.
  • The airports directly — Sangster International in Montego Bay (MBJ) and Ian Fleming International (OCJ) publish operational status; your airline will reflect it too.
  • ODPEM, Jamaica’s Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management (odpem.org.jm) — for official hazard and recovery information.
  • Your own government’s travel advisory (for example travel.state.gov, or the UK and Canadian foreign-travel-advice pages) — for the formal position on travel to Jamaica.

If those sources say travel is operating and your airline is flying, that is far stronger evidence than any reassurance a host could write.

What we can, and cannot yet, confirm about Tower Isle

Our unit is in Tower Isle, St. Mary, on the north coast between Ocho Rios and Oracabessa. For orientation that does not change with the weather: the nearest airport, Ian Fleming International, is 12 min away, and most visitors arrive instead through Montego Bay.

What we are not doing is telling you the building came through fine, because we have not yet been back to see it with our own eyes. Until we have returned and photographed the unit and the complex, we will not publish specific claims about their current condition — good or bad. When we have, this page will carry dated photographs and a straight report.

Why this is a status page, not a reassurance page

The reviews for this complex include accusations that owners describe things that are not true. The entire point of this site is to be the opposite of that. Telling you everything is wonderful in order to win a booking — during a recovery, of all times — would be precisely the behaviour we are trying to distinguish ourselves from. So we would rather show you how to check, admit what we have not verified, and update this page the moment we have real information.

If you already have a booking with us

Get in touch and we will be straight with you about conditions as we understand them, and about what your options are. Cancellation terms follow whichever platform you booked through; we are not going to pressure you either way.

This page is reviewed on a regular schedule and re-dated each time. The “last updated” date at the top is the real one.
